To put, laconically: Chelsea deserved to be Champions from last season, but Conte’s blue army will face a different test next season.
When Roman Abramovich made the decision to hire Conte from Juventus, few eyebrows were raised- albeit his credibility was never underestimated amid his industrious efforts in the Italian league; guiding Bari to the 2008–09 Serie B title, and Siena to promotion from the same division two years later, then became manager of Juventus where he won three consecutive Serie A titles.
Yet, even the ardent followers of the Premier League can testify to its arduous nature and a foreign manager in a demanding league did not help put off critics.
Yet Conte is hard-work and hard-work is Conte.
In fact if you ever doubted Antonio Conte’s, his paroxysm antics on the touchline as early as August 2016 should have given you a second thought.
His meticulous nature soon transcended to his team and the output was a Chelsea side that won the Premier League title with two matches to spare, recorded an outstanding 30 wins in a single season – including a club-record 13 consecutive league victories.
Agreeing to a new two-year deal on July 19, 2017, Conte will now turn his attentions to another sustained assault on the EPL, sandwiched with progress in Europe’s most elite tournament, the Champions League.
New signing Alvaro Morata is expected to bring a different dimension to Chelsea’s attacking line, with Diego Costa set to leave the club.
The £70 million recruit from Real Madrid made an instant impression in his debut match in Chelsea’s 3-2 loss to Bayern in the International Champions Cup with an assist.
Michy Batshuayi is also another striker that could offer spirited competition for the coveted lone central striking berth in Conte’s team.
Chelsea, next season, are the team to watch.
